Why, after all these years, has Oracle released a new version of World?

First of all, it's part of Oracle’s commitment to JDE customer base.  They promised to

• Reduce costs & complexity of integration with desktop apps (email, excel, etc)
• Introduce technology to enable easier add-on functionality of other apps in the future via SOA
• Bring apps into web era

 JD Edwards World A9.1, also referred to as the Renaissance Release, is the delivery on that promise.

The first step in any upgrade is to determine whether or not there are benefits for your business in terms of the application functionality.  Given that this is the first release of JDE World in nearly 10 years, my bet is the answer to any JDE World site is a resounding "YES".

Nevertheless, due diligence practices should be followed. 

In the following pages are outlined the upgrade process for JD Edwards World A9.1.

Step 1 - Evaluate
Will the new functionality in JDE World A9.1 meet or exceed the demands of my business in the next 3-5 years, or will it enhance current business processes?

Step 2 - Plan
Oracle have provided a number of very good tools to help you prepare your current system for the change.  Remember, the upgrade should be timed according to the ability of your business to properly plan, test and execute the upgrade, not by the release of the upgrade.  This should be taken as a formal company project.

Oracle is committed to provide continued releases of JDE World, and have a product roadmap supported by dedicated teams of developers, testers, etc in Denver to deliver on that plan.

Step 3 - Execute
Essentially four steps:

1. Create Upgrade Plan in alternate environment
2. Initial A9.1 Reinstallation into alternate environment
3. Testing, testing, testing.  Scripts are available from Oracle to assist.
4. Go-Live Updating Production environment to A9.1
